Hybrid Solar Power Solution 2025 - Optimizing rooftop solar power

Hybrid Solar Power Solution 2025 - Optimizing rooftop solar power

1. What is a Hybrid Solar Power System?

The Hybrid Solar Power System is a solution that integrates solar energy, grid electricity, and backup generators to optimize renewable energy usage while ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. This is an ideal setup for factories or areas that frequently experience power outages or aim to reduce energy costs.

1.1 How Does a Hybrid Solar Control System Work?

Most factories are equipped with backup generators that activate during power failures. However, traditional on-grid solar systems automatically shut down when the grid fails due to the loss of AC reference voltage.

In a Hybrid Power setup, the AC-side connection point of the solar system is the main busbar that feeds the load. This busbar receives power from both the grid breaker and the generator breaker, coordinated by an ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) cabinet.

The generator must have enough capacity to stabilize load fluctuations due to the variable nature of solar generation.

Operating principle:
Under normal conditions, the system tracks the load and adjusts the solar output accordingly while collecting operational data. In the event of a grid failure, the on-grid solar system shuts down. The facility switches to generator mode, and the control system will detect this and enable the solar system to sync with the generator’s electrical parameters. Then, it modulates the solar output to match the load and coordinate with the generator.

1.2 Key Functions:

  • SCADA system provides real-time monitoring and control of solar power operations.

  • Load-tracking control for solar power generation in both grid-connected and generator modes.

  • Data logging for performance analysis and reporting.

2. Updates from Vietnam Electricity (EVN) – 2025

According to the latest regulations by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Vietnam Electricity (EVN), hybrid solar systems are a key element in Vietnam’s green energy transition strategy. As of 2025, the government continues to encourage rooftop solar investment to reduce fossil fuel reliance and environmental impact.

2.1 New Policy Highlights:

Under Decision No. 1570/QĐ-EVN dated December 31, 2024, new requirements are set for connecting rooftop solar systems to EVN’s monitoring and control network:

  • Technical connection standards: Systems must support communication with EVN’s SCADA via protocols like Modbus TCP and IEC 60870-5-104.

  • Monitoring and control capability: Systems must transmit solar generation data and receive remote control commands.

  • Data retention: Operational data must be logged at 5-minute intervals and stored for at least 7 days.

3. Hino Systech’s Hybrid Control System Architecture

+ Data Acquisition & Control Panel:
Includes a controller and communication devices to collect all solar system data and transmit it to the SCADA system, such as:

  • Data from solar cabinets: energy meters, circuit breaker statuses, relay alarms.

  • Inverter data: power levels, AC/DC voltage, temperature, status, and faults.

  • Weather station data: solar irradiance, panel temperature, ambient temperature.

  • Power meters: solar, grid, and generator readings.

  • Circuit breaker and protective relay status.

  • Real-time inverter power control and main breaker switching based on system conditions.

+ SCADA System:

  • Collects, processes, and stores all plant data for monitoring and control.

  • Built with industrial-grade, open-architecture hardware supporting robust protocol compatibility and network standards.

  • User-friendly HMI interface allows comprehensive control and monitoring.

  • Historical data storage enables system analysis, reporting, and predictive maintenance.

+ Reverse Power Protection Relay
Works independently of SCADA to prevent solar energy from backfeeding into the generator, protecting system integrity.
